If you own a home in South Africa, you already know our climate can be a handful: winter rain in the Cape, summer storms on the Highveld, salty sea air on the coast, and months of hard sun almost everywhere. The tricky part isn’t one big project—it’s little problems hiding in corners until they become expensive.
This guide walks you through the big hitters—roofing, damp/waterproofing, plumbing, electrical, painting, paving, and renovations—and shows you how to spot issues early, what you can handle yourself, and when it’s smarter to call a pro.
Roof health: leak prevention beats leak repair
Think of your roof as a raincoat for your entire house. When it’s intact, life is easy; when one seam fails, everything underneath suffers.
A lot of leaks don’t start with dramatic holes—they start with tiny cracks in tiles, perished flashing, brittle waterproofing on a flat roof, or gutters that quietly overflow into your eaves.
How to check like a pro (safely from ground level): look for uneven lines on the roof, slipped or cracked tiles, rust streaks on metal sheets, and staining on fascias or ceilings after a storm. If water stains come and go with rain, you’ve got a path for water; if they’re permanently damp, you may also be dealing with condensation or rising damp.
What to do first: clear gutters and downpipes, especially before the rainy season. On flat roofs, make sure the water actually finds the outlet—no little dams around parapets. If you’ve got chronic ceiling stains or multiple suspect areas, don’t play whack-a-mole with silicone. Get a roof inspection and a plan that fixes causes, not just marks on the ceiling.
When to call us: recurring leaks, brittle or failing membranes on flat roofs, or widespread corrosion/ageing. We’ll tell you honestly if it’s a simple repair, a sectional re-roof, or time for a full replacement.
Damp & waterproofing: stop moisture at the source
Damp is sneaky. It doesn’t shout—it bubbles paint, leaves musty smells, and creeps up skirtings. In SA we see three usual suspects: rising damp (moisture wicking up through walls), penetrating damp (rain forcing through cracks, parapets, balconies, or bad detailing), and condensation (steam from kitchens/bathrooms with poor ventilation).
How to think about it: paint is a finish, not a fix. If you paint over a moisture problem, it will return—usually uglier. Bathrooms and balconies need proper membranes and upstands before pretty tiles. External walls with rising damp need a barrier in the wall and the right replaster system; otherwise the salts just push through again.
What to do first: boost extraction in wet rooms, run fans during and after showers, and fix obvious cracks before winter. If the same patch keeps coming back, you’re past DIY—it’s time for professional damp proofing or waterproofing.
When to call us: repeating stains, spalling plaster, mould that returns after cleaning, or balconies and flat roofs that weep into rooms below. We’ll test, specify the correct barrier or membrane, and fix finishes properly so you’re not repainting every six months.
Plumbing: pressure, hot water, and dry cupboards
Good plumbing is invisible. You turn a tap and it just works. Trouble shows up as drips under sinks, geyser trays that never seem dry, water hammer thuds in the night, or drains that gurgle and sulk.
First checks that actually help: clean tap aerators (amazing how often that “low pressure” vanishes), make sure isolation valves are fully open, and peek into cupboards for slow leaks around traps and flexi hoses. If your geyser tray has standing water, that’s not “normal”—valves may be failing or pressure is out of spec.
About drains: one-off blockages happen; recurring blockages usually mean a bigger story—roots, collapsed pipes, or bad falls. Jetting and, if needed, a camera inspection stops you guessing.
When to call us: persistent drips, geyser issues, mysterious pressure changes, or repeat blockages. We work to SANS standards and issue a PIRB CoC where required, so insurers and future buyers are happy.
Electrical: safety, reliability, and smart backup
Electricity is unforgiving, so let’s keep it simple and safe. Frequent tripping usually means three things: an overloaded circuit (too much plugged into one line), a short (damaged cable or device), or an earth-leakage fault (current wandering where it shouldn’t).
Hot or discoloured outlets, flickering lights, and a messy unlabelled DB are all red flags.
Smart upgrades that pay off: a modern DB with surge protection and proper RCDs (earth leakage), a clearly labelled layout, and a backup system with a safe changeover that powers just the essentials (Wi-Fi, lights, fridge). You’ll glide through load-shedding without trying to run the whole house from a small inverter.
When to call us: repeated trips, warm sockets, storm-related damage, or any new circuits for renovations. We test, fix root causes, and issue an Electrical CoC where applicable.
Painting: prep is everything (and climate matters)
A beautiful finish doesn’t start with paint; it starts with the surface. Hairline cracks need proper repair, new plaster needs alkali-resistant primer, stains need stain-blockers, and metal needs anti-corrosive primers—especially near the coast. Outside, UV is relentless; inside, low-VOC paints keep the air friendlier.
A good rhythm: fix small plaster issues as you spot them, don’t wait until the whole façade is flaking. If you’ve had damp, solve it before painting—otherwise you’re paying twice.
When to call us: if you’re seeing chalking, peeling, repeating stains, or you want a spec that actually lasts in our climate. We handle the substrate properly and deliver crisp, durable finishes.
Paving: it’s all in the base
Pretty pavers laid on a soft base will break your heart. Good paving is boring under the surface: correct excavation, compacted sub-base, neat edge restraints, and sensible falls so water goes where it should. When those pieces are right, the surface stays put.
If you’ve got dips, pooling, or joints that cough up weeds, the fix is almost always the same: lift the affected area, correct the base, relay, and lock it in. Don’t be tempted by quick fixes that only hide the real problem.
When to call us: rutting on driveways, chronic puddles on patios, edges drifting into lawns, or drains that never seem to keep up with a summer storm.
Renovations & extensions: plan once, build once
Great renovations don’t just add space; they remove friction. Maybe that’s an open plan between kitchen and lounge, a garage conversion that actually feels like part of the house, or a second bathroom that ends morning traffic. The secret is planning: structure and services first, then waterproofing, then finishes.
If walls are moving, you’ll probably need plans and an engineer’s input (SANS 10400). It’s not red tape for the sake of it—it’s how you make sure beams, foundations, plumbing, electrics, and fire/ventilation are safe and legal. The payoff is a space that looks seamless and works beautifully day-to-day.
When to call us: if you’re knocking through, adding on, or re-doing wet areas. We coordinate plans, structure, trades, and timelines so the project doesn’t eat your life.
DIY vs call a pro (a simple rule of thumb)
If the fix involves waterproofing membranes, electrical safety devices, structural changes, or anything inside a wall/ceiling you can’t see, it’s usually cheaper and safer to get help early.
Quick DIY patches on those items have a bad habit of turning into bigger bills later. If you’re unsure, send photos—we’ll tell you straight whether it’s a quick tip you can do yourself or something we should inspect.
